Indosole

Indosole

In 2004, while he was on a trip in Bali, Kyle Parsons bought a pair of sandals with soles made from motorbike tires. This got hime thinking and after doing some research he found out that 1.5 billion tires end up in landfills every year. Due to their structure, tires take thousands of years to decompose. In third world countries tires are used as a cheap alternative for fuel. This, along with tires that catch fire due to lightning storms, result in toxic oils and fumes that are harmful for human health.

Kyle now had a mission to pursue his new passion for repurposed tire sole footwear. He launched Indosole in 2009 together with his business partner Faye. With their venture they hoped that by transforming discarded tires into soles, he could do his part to help alleviate Indonesia’s pollution problem. Through continuous development of their tire sole footwear, Indosole ensures that their products are fashionable and super comfortable. By buying a pair of Indosole you join them on their quest to save 1 million tires from negatively impacting our environment. In addition to the tires it uses, Indosole sandals and shoes also feature other repurposed materials like burlap sacks and coffee wrappers. For everything else, the people at Indosole turn to the Earth itself, using materials like dried grass that’s been stitched together. You won’t find any animal materials in Indosole products; they’re a vegan company, one that operates without fuel-powered machinery or smokestacks. Indosole, headquartered in San Francisco, California, collaborates with a manufacturer in Bali to intercept tires on the way to landfills all over Indonesia. The sandal soles are cut out of the tires by hand and the rest of the shoes are constructed from organic canvas, banana leaves or grass.

Indosole is a certified B Corporation, one of over 1.000 companies using business as a force for good. They got certified in 2014, proof that they meet the rigorous standards of social and environmental performance required by the nonprofit B Lab. Indosole is transparent with their operations, routinely providing glimpses of their production process on their social media platforms.
