Klean Kanteen Australia

Back in 2002, there were no stainless steel water bottles for personal hydration, and the health and environmental issues linked to plastic use were not widely known. Seeing the issues early and clearly, Robert Seals, the inventor and founder of Klean Kanteen, began putting together the first prototype with things he bought at the local hardware store in Chico, California.

In 2004, Robert introduced the 27oz Klean Kanteen onto the market to give people a better option than plastic and lined aluminum bottles: a safe, healthy, lightweight, reusable bottle free of Bisphenol A (BPA) and other toxic substances. The mission to provide superior solutions and help people make better decisions had begun! In those early days, Klean Kanteens were shared with people at music festivals, environmental fairs, outdoor recreation events and other sorts of gatherings.

In 2005 the Cresswell family took over Klean Kanteen, and they have built upon Seals' original vision by developing more durable stainless steel solutions to replace toxic plastic and displace single-use container pollution. With the mentorship of their father Darrel Cresswell, brother/sister team Jeff Cresswell and Michelle Kalberer have guided the company towards more growth and expansion and are both at the forefront of the company's charitable work and policy advocacy.

Since releasing the first Kanteen in 2004, significant steps have been taken to lower the environmental footprint. Klean Kanteen became a member of 1% For The Planet in 2008, and has donated more than 1% of their annual sales to nonprofits working to protect and promote the health of our amazing planet. To date, the brand has given away more than 3.1 million dollars in unrestricted funds to nonprofits working on climate change and related environmental issues.

In 2012, Klean Kanteen got certified as a Certified B Corporation, meeting the rigorous and independent B Corp standards of performance, accountability, and transparency. These standards will continue to guide the label in the years ahead. In addition to adopt business policies that support environmental and fair labor practices, Klean Kanteen partners with likeminded nonprofits and environmental organizations working to educate the public about health and environmental issues.

Klean Kanteen identifies and measures emissions from their business activities (Scope 1-3). This information is valuable for informing design, manufacturing and operational decisions, as well as raising staff awareness and engagement around emissions reductions.

For over a decade, the label has purchased carbon offsets and renewable energy credits for the GHG emissions we weren't yet able to eliminate. All of Klean’s reductions through offsetting meet the “big six” attributes of quality carbon credits: real, permanent, quantifiable, verifiable, enforceable, and additional. In 2017, we installed 216 high-efficiency solar panels at our corporate headquarters. This array now supplies 100% of the building’s electricity. While the energy consumption at headquarters has increased, the carbon emissions have plummeted thanks to their clean, renewable energy source, and the beautiful and abundant California sunshine!

Climate neutral s a nonprofit organization working to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world by recruiting companies to publicly measure, reduce and offset their carbon emissions. Klean Kanteen has completed this rigorous three-step process and is now 100% carbon neutral in the manufacture and delivery of our products worldwide.

With the creation of the very first Klean Kanteen the goal was to promote healthy living and respect for the environment by giving people an affordable alternative to plastic bottles. From the get go, some of the concerns the customers have expressed about manufacturing in China have been shared. However, after much time and research into manufacturing options, manufacture of Klean Kanteens in China would allow the label to provide a handcrafted product of exceptional quality at a price point that would support broad accessibility and cultivation of mindful, reusable habits. To achieve these standards the following endeavors are in place:

  • Establishment of supplier relations and production management in accordance with a thorough, custom design, Supplier Code of Conduct.

  • Third-party social audits.

  • Regular facility visits by Klean Kanteen and its representatives.

  • Klean Kanteen representative on-site for observation during production.

  • Materials and product safety testing.

  • Quality assurance inspections.

The manufacturers who produce Klean Kanteen bottles and caps maintain certifications for Quality Management System (ISO 9001) and Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) standards established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The stainless steel supplier for Klean Kanteen production also maintains the ISO 9001 certification, as well as the more intensive ISO/TS 16949 quality management certification required for stainless steel suppliers of auto manufacturers.

A cutting edge chemical assessment method called GreenScreen For Safer Chemicals, developed by the non-profit Clean Production Action. GreenScreen® is used to score ingredients in the new finish by their level of safety. Ingredients that did not meet the standards for contact with people and the environment were eliminated. The result is Klean Coat, the cornerstone of truly clean reusable products. A chip-resistant, durable finish that is designed with care to stand up to your inspired life. With Klean Coat Klean Kanteen went beyond typical standards for human and environmental safety in consumer products.
