The Kovac Family

The Kovac Family consists of Christopher and Camilla Kovac, founders and operators, and their daughters Klara and Filippa. The company designs and develops interior products which cause minimum impact on the environment and are easy to recycle. Since its foundation in 2012 The Kovac Family has focused on sustainability as the core value of their business and on researching local and environmentally friendly material. The products are made in Sweden using sustainable materials and are sold exclusively in their own showroom and on the web shop to avoid traditional retail markups.

Inspiration for all their products and projects come from nature, like so many have done before us. Ever since the origins of our history, humans have studied mother nature and mimicked her natural system in order to solve complex problems of our existence. Designers, architects, artists and engineers from all ages have found inspiration in the flawless beauty and the perfect harmony of the natural world. This concept is commonly known as biomimicry (or biomimetic) and has been also the inspiring muse of The Kovac Family who, with its innovative sustainable design project and exquisite product, aims to improve everyday life and the environment.

The collection is simply called Numbers, each product named after the number of parts used to construct each form. The inspiration behind it all comes from nature itself, by asking the question: “How can we make this better in all aspects to improve the every day life and our environment?”. Currently, the collection consists of an alpaca throw, the 25Lamp and the 15Chair. The 25Lamp is made from 25 pieces of FSC sustainable wood and comes in a 3 cm flat pack. Its shape mimics the shape of a shell and it is very versatile. It can be placed anywhere, as well as hung creating a focal point where ever it is positioned.  They come with either 3 or 5 meters of cord giving you plenty of options to drape and hang as you wish.

The ambition of the Kovac Family is to create products that have the smallest impact possible on the environment by sourcing the materials needed and producing them locally.  The challenge was to be able to create something using a minimum amount of certified environmentally friendly materials as possible and also have the capacity to be easily recycled.

The products are handmade in Sweden using sustainable materials. They are sold exclusively in their own showroom and the webshop to avoid traditional retail markups. On their mission to support sustainable research and looking into the possibilities to develop a bioluminescent light source The Kovac Family started to collaborate with IPBio in Brazil. The ambitious research project focuses on “creating sustainable flat light, in a wallpaper thin flexible material, using a biomimetic method” and all the company profit goes back into financing the project. Also in this project the inspiration comes from nature: marine sponges, beetles, and tropical butterflies which have always produced light in a natural, economical and efficient way. It is by this means that Kovac Family is determined to find solutions, looking for the answers that already exist in nature; thus the creation of a sustainable lightening is very close. There will be a new revolutionary way to produce lighting in our houses and environments, a new way to use it and to power it. It’s ultimately a great contribution to the world and to our lives as it will not only lead to vital reductions in CO2 emissions and costs, but will also create a more conscious mind set in all of us, and sensitivity towards the impact our lifestyle has upon nature.
